About the documentation
We are actively moving all documentation over to this website and into wiki format for easy update and management for the future. This is a big undertaking, so please bear with us while we undergo this excercise. The previous PDF manual can be found at: http://www.epihandy.org/images/e/eb/EpiHandy_UserManual_1_1.pdf

Introduction
EpiHandy – StudyManager is a powerful yet flexible desktop application that allows both experienced and novice researchers to easily design and manage multi-lingual questionnaires that control the data collection activity in the field. There is no coding needed and powerful, easy to use wizards guide the process of setting up advanced validation rules, skip patterns / branching, translation of the questionnaires and finally export of collected data to many common data formats.
The multi-language features enables researchers to design and setup a survey once and then translate it into any number of languages without impacting the structure of a survey.
By simple drag and drop functionality a whole survey can be duplicated within seconds, this is achieved through the library function, from where you can copy or make an active link to the questions. The linking and multi-language features enables update and translation of a specific question used in several surveys in only one place. This approach drastically improves reuse of questionnaires and translations and thereby the time needed to design questionnaires.
The designed survey can be previewed and tested in the StudyManager or exported to a text or Word document for easy printing and proof reading. EpiHandy StudyManager can also be used for designing paper based questionnaires through the above feature.
There are basically no restrictions in number of different questionnaires, pages, questions or options of a question that a survey can contain.
Distribution & Collection of Surveys
The designed questionnaires can be distributed to any number of handheld computers and it is possible to run multiple surveys from the same handheld computer
Both distribution of surveys and collection of responses is done at the same time through synchronization. It is achieved by simply connecting the handheld to the desktop through any available network connection or the cradle and then initializing the synchronization.
The transfer of the data is fast, reliable and completely transparent to the user.
Data Export and Analysis
EpiHandy is a pure tool for collection and handling of data; It is assumed that most users will prefer using their data analysis program of choice for data analysis.
EpiHandy therefore supports export of results to many common used data formats including XML (eXtended Markup Language), Comma and Tabulator separated values and easy import into SPSS.
A wizard guides the process of exporting the and includes options of filtering and previewing data.
Security & Data Storage
EpiHandy - StudyManager includes user management to register users and specify which users are permitted to what actions i.e. who can collect data for which surveys (access permissions). The user security prevents users from getting into unauthorized areas of the system.
Data on both handheld and desktop is stored on industry standard databases which include SQL support, password protection and 128bits encryption. This gives a very high level of protection against unwanted access to the collected data.
To save storage space and improve security the collected data is removed from the handheld after a successful synchronization.
Nutrition Status Calculator
Traditional calculation of nutritional status (anthropometry) is often done by collecting the information and then using special programs i.e. EpiNut to calculate it. EpiHandy has this feature built-in, a user can therefore calculate BMI, BMI for Age, Weight for Height, Height for Age, Weight for Age and other common anthropometric indicators, showing Z-score, Percent of Median and Percentile. Calculations are based on WHO 2005 (MGRS) growth charts used in i.e. WHO Anthro.
Question Types
EpiHandy supports a number of flexible question and response types, including all standard Windows controls i.e. text and date entry, in addition to special made controls.
Several new question types are under development, for an updated list of Question types, please refer to the listing of questions types below
