Install EpiHandy – Server for Windows

The EpiHandy – Server for Windows consists of several components that are required for remote data access by clients, database synchronization and much more. This is a zip file containing all components needed to install the desktop parts of EpiHandy and the database server. It also includes automatic setup of these components.

Install by doing the following:

  1. Check that you have installed IIS (Internet information services) on your computer.IIS is an optional part of windows that is required by EpiHandy.
  2. To install IIS do the following (-> means navigate to)
  3. Start
  4. Control Panel
  5. Add or Remove Programs
  6. Select Add/Remove Windows components on the left side
  7. Select Internet Information Service
  8. Click on Details
  9. Uncheck the SMTP option (email service, which is a security risk)
  10. Click OK
  11. Click Next
  12. Restart the computer after completing the wizard
  13. Unzip the "EpiHandy_Server_Install.zip" to a folder on your hardrive (it can be deleted after the install has completed)
  14. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder to where you extracted the zip file above.
  15. Double click the file: EpiHandyServerInstall.exe
  16. Follow the instructions on the screen
  17. Add instructions for the sql ce wizard part.

After completing the installation it is advised that you restart your computer once more to ensure all components are properly registered.

After installation and restart you should have a small computer symbol with a green arrow on it in your system tray.

Install the EpiHandy – StudyManager for Windows (Client version)

Navigate to where you saved the downloaded file "EpiHandy_StudyManager_Install.msi" and double click it (Use Windows Explorer) After this has been installed you can try open the EpiHandy StudyManager by navigating to: -> Start -> Programs -> EpiHandy -> EpiHandy StudyManager (Client)

Install the EpiHandy MobileClient for PocketPC

Please note: Before going to the next step make sure you have installed ActiveSync (which is part of the software accompanying the PocketPC). If you don\’t have it installed you can download it from: [1]

Navigate to where you saved the downloaded file: "EpiHandy_MoblieClient_InstallerTool.msi" and double click it (Use Windows Explorer). Follow the instructions given.

This actually does not install EpiHandy - MobileClient on the PocketPC, but it installs a software that can install it on any number of PocketPCs.

To install on a new handheld do the following 1. Make sure you first have installed the installer as described above (only needed once). 2. Please remember to connect your handheld to the PC before continuing 3. Once that is done you navigate -> Start -> Programs -> EpiHandy -> EpiHandy Mobile Client Installer. 4. Click on Install and follow instructions on the screen and on the PocketPC. 5. You might get some messages on the PocketPC while installing, just ignore those. 6. On the PocketPC you can now find EpiHandy - MobileClient by navigating -> Start -> Programs -> EpiHandy - MobileClient.

Please note that no forms will be available before you synchronize with the desktop. Do that after you have created some test forms using the EpiHandy – StudyManager (Client), see below for more details.


The fourth step is to import the sample DSS baseline tool.

Open EpiHandy - StudyManager (Client) (->Start -> Programs -> EpiHandy -> EpiHandy – StudyManager (Client))

Please refer to section "Username and passwords\’ if you have not already registered a username and password. If you have registered a username and password, then enter those and click OK.

When you have logged you can import the sample DSS baseline tool Navigate to ->File ->Import/Export -> The steps should be self explanatory.

After importing it you can try to download it to your handheld. Before doing that please remember to connect to the handheld to your computer and that Active Sync shows the green state.

Open EpiHandy - MobileClient on the Handheld and click on the green round button with two arrows on it.

Follow, instructions, after it has downloaded you can click on open study. Use same password as registered earlier.


Username and passwords

If this is the first time you use the system, you will have to register a new user. No default users are available in the system.

The first time you start this program you must enter the username Administrator and blank password, which will allow you to register a new user and password. Note, this only works if no users are registered, so please take care in choosing a username and password that you don\’t forget. We have no means of restoring a forgotten password.

After finishing registering your new user you need to enter that password and username to continue. An error message saying login failed might be displayed after creating the new user, disregard this and try again with your new username and password.

Please remember that we have no means of restoring your username or passwords if you forget it...


Reinstallation on a PPC

  1. Setup Activesync, and setup a new partnership – use sync only with this computer option
  2. Uncheck all items in the list of items to be synchronized, except for Files
  3. Answer Yes to the question about creating a folder
  4. On the PPC
  5. Start  Programs  File explorer
  6. REMOVE ERROR FILE
    1. tap and hold EpiHandyerrorlog file, select delete, tap Yes to confirm
  7. REMOVE DATA FILES
    1. navigate to <My Device>
    2. select the <SD Card>
    3.  Edit  Select all
    4. tap and hold on one of the selected files
    5. tap Delete and Yes to confirm
  8. Reset the handheld (softreset)
    1. Press pin in small hole
  9. UNINSTALL EPIHANDY MOBILE CLIENT
    1.  Start  Settings  System  Remove Programs
    2. In the list select EpiHandy mobile client
    3. Tap Remove
    4. confirm by tapping Yes
    5. A uninstall incomplete message might appear, tap OK
    6. Tap OK or X until all windows are closed
  10. REMOVE Existing files of EpiHandy
    1. Start  Programs  File explorer
    2. Navitate to My Device
    3. Tap on Program Files
    4. Tap and hold EpiHandy mobileclient folder
    5. Select delete, confirm by tapping yes
  11. Final cleanup
    1. navigate to my device
    2. If any installer files are found, delete them (tap and hold, select delete)
  12. Reset handheld
  13. Connect handheld to PC
  14. Ensure activesync is connected and ok
  15. On the destkop go to start – programs – EpiHandy – EpiHandy Mobile Client installer tool
  16. List of components to be installed
  17. Click Install
  18. On the PPC start – programs – EpiHandy
  19. Click on Synch icon
  20. Click yes
  21. click yes
  22. go to synch settings
  23. go to file locations
  24. click on select in local storage folder
  25. select a safe storage folder i.e. SD card
  26. click ok and see the progress of synchronization
  27. if download of initial settings does not work. Try to change ActiveSynch settings.
    1. Options  Rules  change the Pass Through – Connection
